How to Prepare for a Sleep Study: A Simple Patient Guide

Being asked to undergo a sleep study can bring up several questions. Will you be able to sleep normally? Do you need to change your routine? Should you bring anything with you? Preparation is usually straightforward. Understanding the process beforehand can help you feel more comfortable and follow your healthcare team's instructions.

1. Follow the instructions given by your healthcare team

Your preparation may depend on whether you are having an in-lab polysomnography test or a home sleep test. Follow the instructions provided for your particular test. Do not change prescribed medicines or stop taking them without discussing it with your doctor.

2. Maintain your usual sleep routine

Unless your clinician advises otherwise, try to follow your normal sleep and wake times in the days before the test. Avoid deliberately staying awake to make yourself tired. Ask your healthcare team whether you should continue your usual medication schedule.

3. Ask about food, drinks and daily activities

Ask whether you need to avoid caffeine, alcohol, naps or particular activities on the day of your study. Instructions can vary depending on the test and your medical circumstances.

4. Prepare comfortable clothing

For an overnight study, ask what clothing is appropriate and whether you should bring toiletries, a pillow or other personal items. For a home test, confirm how the device will be provided, how it should be fitted, and whom to contact if you experience a problem.

5. Share relevant health information
