BiPAP Machine for HospitalsWard, HDU and step-down NIV, to buy or rent

Choosing a BiPAP machine for hospital use is a different job from choosing one for a patient's bedroom. A ward unit is moved between beds, cleaned between patients and put on people whose breathing may not keep to its own schedule. We supply the Löwenstein prisma range to hospitals in Chennai and Tamil Nadu, for sale or monthly rental.

Below: the five models we offer, how they differ on backup rate and battery, where a bilevel device ends and a ventilator begins, and when renting beats buying.

When does a ward need ST mode, a backup rate or a battery?

ST mode and the backup rate

In S mode the machine follows each breath the patient takes. In T mode it delivers breaths at a fixed rate. ST does both: it follows the patient, and if a breath does not come in time it delivers one at the set backup rate.

On a ward this is the feature to insist on. The unit may be on a different patient next week, and you will not always know in advance whose breathing will pause. Backup-rate therapy is prescribed for central apnoea, neuromuscular disease and COPD with CO₂ retention. Every model on this page has it.

autoS/T and target volume

The prisma 30ST models go a step further. In autoS/T they adjust pressure support and the backup rate to hold a target volume, set anywhere from 300 to 2,000 ml. That suits patients whose needs shift through the night or with position. The prisma NIV 30 ST and prisma 30 ST (NIV) listings also carry SCOPES, Löwenstein's preset starting configurations for COPD and hypoventilation.

Battery

The prisma 25ST runs on mains power only. That is fine for a fixed bed with a reliable supply. If patients go to imaging, move between wards, or your building has power interruptions, the prisma VENT 40 (NIV) is listed with battery backup of up to 10 hours, at about 3 kg with the battery fitted.

Alarms and what staff can see

The prisma VENT 40 (NIV) shows flow, pressure and volume on its touchscreen and has extensive alarms. The prisma 30ST devices list alarms alongside an auto or fixed backup frequency, and use the forced oscillation technique to tell central from obstructive events. Therapy data can be exported by SD card or viewed through prisma CLOUD.

Mode, IPAP, EPAP and backup rate are prescribed by the treating doctor. Nothing on this page is a setting recommendation for a patient.

Non-invasive ventilator vs BiPAP

BiPAP is itself a form of non-invasive ventilation, which is why the two terms get mixed up. The useful distinction is the device class. A bilevel device like the prisma 25ST or 30ST is a pressure-support machine. A home ventilator like the prisma VENT 40 is built for chronic respiratory failure that needs full NIV, and it shows in the specification.

Buy, or rent for surge capacity?

Buy when the units will be in use most of the year and you want them on your asset register. Purchased units carry Löwenstein's manufacturer warranty; we handle warranty registration, coordinate in-warranty service and offer maintenance and repair after the warranty ends.

Rent when the need has an end date: a seasonal rise in respiratory admissions, a step-down unit opening before its budget is approved, or a single long-stay patient. Rentals are charged monthly (minimum rental period: 1 week), include installation, training and ongoing technical support, and come with a GST invoice.

BiPAP machine charges in hospital: what goes into them

Families often search for what BiPAP costs in a hospital. There is no standard figure. Each hospital sets its own charge, and the line on the bill usually covers more than the machine: the mask and circuit, the bed category (ward, HDU or ICU), monitoring and nursing time. The hospital's billing desk is the only place to get its rate.

For the hospital, the device cost is the purchase price or the monthly rental shown above. How that is passed on in patient billing is the hospital's decision. If a patient goes home on BiPAP after discharge, renting or buying a unit for home is a separate arrangement; see BiPAP machines and BiPAP rental.

BiPAP for hospitals: common questions

There is no single "hospital grade" label to look for. What matters on a ward is an ST mode with a backup rate, alarms and on-screen monitoring your staff can read, a battery if the unit travels with the patient, and therapy data the doctor can review. The prisma 30ST NIV listings and the prisma VENT 40 (NIV) are specified for both home and clinical use.
