How to Understand Your Sleep Study Report

A sleep-study report may contain medical abbreviations, numbers and graphs. Understanding a few common terms can help you prepare useful questions for your doctor. Your report should always be interpreted alongside your symptoms, medical history and the type of test performed.

What is AHI?

AHI stands for Apnea-Hypopnea Index. It describes the average number of apneas and hypopneas recorded per hour of sleep during an appropriate sleep study. AHI is often used when assessing obstructive sleep apnea, but it is not the only factor used for diagnosis or treatment decisions.

What does SpO₂ mean?

SpO₂ is an estimate of blood oxygen saturation measured using a pulse oximeter. A report may show average oxygen saturation, the lowest recorded value and time spent below a specified level. These measurements need careful interpretation.

What are sleep stages?

A full polysomnography study may identify non-REM and REM sleep. Not every home sleep apnea test measures sleep stages directly because some home tests do not record brain activity.

Why does the type of test matter?

Different tests collect different information. If a test is inconclusive or does not explain your symptoms, your clinician may recommend further assessment.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • What are the main findings in my report?
  • Do the results explain my symptoms?
  • Is further testing needed?
  • What treatment or follow-up do you recommend?
  • When should I return for review?
