Kurattai (Snoring) Treatment in Chennai

Snoring has many causes, and the right treatment depends on which one is yours. Loud snoring with pauses in breathing is often sleep apnea, and that needs a test, not a home remedy. Start with the 1-minute check below, or book a home sleep test that you do in your own bed.

  5. Are you overweight, or has your collar size gone up?

Why do people snore?

Snoring is the sound of air squeezing through a narrowed airway. These are the most common reasons the airway narrows at night.

  • Narrow or relaxed throat

During sleep the throat muscles relax. If the airway is narrow, the air flowing through it makes the tissue vibrate, and that is the snoring sound.

  • Weight and neck size

Extra weight around the neck presses on the airway, which is why snoring often gets worse as weight goes up.

  • Blocked nose

A cold, allergy or a bent nasal septum forces you to breathe through your mouth, which makes snoring more likely.

  • Alcohol and sleeping on your back

Both let the tongue and throat fall back further, narrowing the airway.

When snoring means sleep apnea

In obstructive sleep apnea the airway does not just narrow, it closes for a few seconds at a time, many times an hour. Oxygen drops, the brain wakes you briefly to breathe again, and you rarely remember it. Left untreated it is linked to high blood pressure, heart problems and accidents from daytime sleepiness. Get tested if your snoring comes with any of these:

  • Someone has seen you stop breathing or gasp
  • You feel sleepy during the day, even after a full night
  • You wake up with a headache or dry mouth
  • You have high blood pressure
  • You wake often to pass urine at night
  • You find it hard to concentrate

Kurattai treatment options

The right one depends on the cause, which is why a sleep test comes first when the warning signs are there.

Plain snoring

Lifestyle changes

Sleep on your side, lose weight if needed, avoid alcohol and heavy meals close to bedtime, and keep a regular sleep routine.

Blocked nose or allergy

Nose treatment

An ENT doctor can treat congestion, allergies or a deviated septum that make you breathe through your mouth.

Mild cases, as advised

Oral appliance

A dentist-fitted device that holds the jaw forward during sleep, for some people with snoring or mild sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea confirmed by a test

CPAP machine

Gentle air pressure through a mask keeps the airway open all night. It is the standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.

If the test shows sleep apnea, we supply CPAP machines in Chennai, set to your prescription. See CPAP rental in Chennai or compare CPAP machines.

How the sleep test works

  1. 1

    We bring the device

Our technician delivers a small recording device to your home and shows you how to wear the sensors.

  2. 2

    You sleep at home

Sleep in your own bed. The device records your breathing, oxygen level and snoring through the night.

  3. 3

    You get the report

A sleep physician reviews the recording. You get a report on whether it is sleep apnea and what to do next.

Kurattai (snoring) treatment: common questions

Not always. Light snoring now and then is common and usually harmless. Loud, nightly snoring with pauses in breathing, choking or daytime tiredness can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea, which is a medical condition that should be tested and treated.
