What is BiPAP therapy and who needs it?
BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) is a form of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) that delivers two pressure levels — a higher pressure when you inhale (IPAP) and a lower pressure when you exhale (EPAP). This makes it significantly easier to breathe than single-pressure CPAP at high settings.
BiPAP is prescribed when CPAP therapy is not sufficient, or for conditions beyond OSA that involve respiratory muscle weakness or impaired gas exchange.

How does a BiPAP machine work?

Higher pressure on inhalation (IPAP)
When you breathe in, the machine delivers a higher pressure to push air into the lungs — opening the airway and ensuring adequate oxygen delivery.

Lower pressure on exhalation (EPAP)
When you breathe out, pressure drops — making it much easier to exhale. This is the key advantage over CPAP for patients with higher pressure requirements.

If you stop breathing, the machine delivers a timed backup breath — essential for central apnea, NMD, and post-surgical patients.
