BiPAP for Central Sleep Apnea
Precision Therapy for Complex Apnea Patterns.
Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain doesn't send a consistent signal to breathe — different from the airway blockage seen in obstructive sleep apnea. For select patients with central, mixed or complex sleep apnea, a sleep specialist may prescribe BiLevel-ST therapy such as the Prisma 25ST, which can detect central events and deliver an automatic backup breath.

How BiLevel-ST Therapy Helps
Distinguishes Event Types
Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) helps the device tell central and obstructive events apart, responding appropriately to each.
Automatic Backup Breath
autoBackup Frequency (PRIO S+) delivers a breath on its own during central events where natural breathing pauses.
Two Independent Pressures
IPAP and EPAP can be set separately, covering complex presentations standard CPAP does not address.
autoS/T Adaptation
Continuously adjusts backup frequency and pressure support to track your natural breathing pattern.
Who Can Benefit?
- Patients diagnosed with central, mixed or complex sleep apnea via a sleep study
- Those for whom standard CPAP has not resolved central or treatment-emergent events
- Patients prescribed BiLevel-ST/autoS/T therapy following a titration study
- Always under the supervision of a sleep physician or pulmonologist
About Central & Complex Sleep Apnea
Central sleep apnea (CSA) occurs when the brain's respiratory drive itself pauses, rather than the airway being physically blocked as in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Some patients present with a mix of both (complex or mixed sleep apnea) or develop central events only after starting CPAP (treatment-emergent CSA). A sleep specialist diagnoses this via polysomnography and determines whether BiLevel-ST therapy is appropriate.
